In Jewish memory there are customs (still practised today by some communities) of combining a little honey-tasting with a child’s early Torah learning. As small children enjoy a honey cake or a cookie dipped in honey, they learn that Torah is God’s gift, bringing joy and sweetness to their lives.
Torah is the very soul of the Jewish people. According to Christian belief it is Jesus Christ (‘God’s living Torah’ as described by Pope Benedict XVI) who reveals the face of God and in whom we are formed as a holy people.
Amidst the bitterness of sin and human limitation, Scripture continually calls God’s people back to the graced (‘sweet’) foundational story which makes sense of their lives.
